être dans le pétrin un pétrin is food related. It is a dough trough. and to keep the culinary analogy, the English translation for être dans le pétrin is to be in a pickle.  Sometimes instead of je suis dans le pétrin, you may hear je suis dans la Béchamelle.

un paris-brest

Paris is the capital of France and Brest is the Western-most city in Brittany. The paris-brest got its name from the famous bicycle race that runs from Paris to Brest. In the late 19th century, a pastry cook who lived on the road where the race is held wanted to increase his business. He had the idea of creating a doughnut shaped cake that reminded him of the bicycle wheel. He filled it with delicious praline-flavored cream and to this day it still sells well in French pâtisseries.

filer means a lot of different things, many of which have to do with to leave a place, to run away from a place. filer en douce means to leave a room unnoticed. Filer à l’anglaise I think is translated by to take a French leave – that’s ironic – leaving without saying goodbye, in a somewhat rude way. Filer en catastrophe means to have to leave abruptly.
