It’s ‘la fête des mères’ soon in France. We’re celebrating mother’s day in advance and traveling back in time today. Luis Mariano, who was really big in 1958 is singing this moving – did I say mushy – song in honor of his mom. I realize his operetta style isn’t really in these days, but what wouldn’t we do for our dear mothers. This song is dedicated to moms all over the world. Don’t forget that there is a companion worksheet for this podcast. This lesson is called ‘Le temps du muguet – Lily-of-the-valley time’. Traditionally, on May 1, you give your love ones a branch of lily-of-the-valley – especially one with thirteen flowers – as a good luck charm. Here is yours. This classic song by Francis Lemarque in 1959 with a Russian melody talks about how wonderful it is to see lily-of-the-valley at the same time every year. With it, we’ll review time adverbs and flowers with fun practice in the companion worksheet.

Today, we’re listening to a French grande vedette from the sixties through the eighties. Dalida is singing a song about a cougar – way ahead of her times. This 40 year-old woman fell for a young man and they don’t have the same take on their relationship. Get the song and the lyrics in the companion worksheet, along with a review of near past, expressions with FAIRE and how to translate ‘it makes me’. It’s not as easy as it seems. Of course, you’ll be able to practice all of this in the worksheet as well.

‘C’est le temps des grandes métamorphoses‘ – ‘It’s time to get in shape’ says Olivia Ruiz in her song La femme chocolat, The Chocolate Lady. This is a very goofy song where Olivia is complaining about her weight gain. She says she’s going to blow away like a hot air balloon if she keeps on eating chocolate. The companion worksheet that you can get as a member has a chapter on command forms and personal pronouns and a list on body parts as well as the song and its translation.

Welcome to this intermediate FRENCH ETC. Podcast called ‘Les Chansons françaises – French songs’, where you can learn every day French every day and learn new vocabulary and grammar in the companion worksheet that you can get on the Web site.

Today, we’re listening to Daniel Balavoine 1978’s song called ‘Le chanteur’ – ‘The singer’. Balavoine introduces himself as a young high-school boy who dreams of becoming a singer, a decadent star, and even a god – why not? He’s going crazy imagining his whole career, from childish hopes to the end of it. This song was a huge hit, and if you can stand the music arrangements coming straight from the 70s and the high pitch of Balavoine’s voice, you’ll be entertained by this classic from 30 years ago. And of course, it gives us another great opportunity to learn a lot of everyday French, because that’s what we’re all about. The companion worksheet has the song and it’s whole translation. It also has an extra list of vocabulary about songs, and th different uses of the words ‘bien’ and ‘tout’.

A man is leaving a woman after breakfast and a morning cigarette. And of course, as always, fun practice exercises to make sure you’re on your way to make progress in French.

Today, we’re listening to the first Lady, Carla Bruni. She’s singing her 2002 hit ‘Quelqu’un m’a dit’. In the song, Carla says ‘quelqu’un m’a dit – passé composé and ‘que tu m’aimais’ – imparfait. Let’s review that: let’s try to finally understand the difference between the and the passé composé and the imparfait. And let’s go over the vocabulary to describe feelings and emotions as well.

Françoise Hardy sings this quiet song with her husband Jacques Dutronc. It’s called ‘Puisque vous partez en voyage – Because you’re taking a trip’. Get the worksheet with a list of travel vocabulary, about comings and goings, pronouns and reflexive verbs such as in ‘se moquer de’.

Today, we’re listening to Les enfoirés, a showbiz charity choir that Coluche, a comedian known of his chocking sense of humor, started in 1986. All kinds of singers, actors sportsmen and politicians get together once a year and make a CD. All the proceeds go to ‘Les restos du Cœur – The Restaurants of the Heart’ to feed millions of hungry people during the winter months. The 2011 edition is an adaptation of the band Indochine’s song ‘J’ai demandé à la lune’. The artists point out the insecurity of the poverty level in France and they remind us that we should always do what we can to help the ones in need. The Premium worksheet has the whole story, and an opportunity to go over a list of French verbs that require a special attention and how to use these verbs with pronouns.

The French don’t have a ‘song for the New Year’. I guess after partying for so long, there is no more energy for singing. Today, we’ll listen to a really nice cover of Roger Miller’s ‘Old Toy Train’ Christmas song. Nana Mouskouri, sitting next to famous guitar player George Brassens in 1972 is singing the French version. It’s called ‘Petit Garçon’ – Little Boy – and was translated by New Zealand writer Graeme Allwright, I believe. A little boy is falling asleep waiting for Santa to give him the toys he dreamt about. The premium worksheet has a long list of Christmas vocabulary, and introduction to reflexive verbs and how to work with ‘dont’ – which. It also has the three versions of the song.

T’is the season ! Today, we’re listening to French poem written by Placide Cappeau in the 1850’s and then set to music to become a big favorite at Midnight mass. It’s called ‘Minuit Chrétiens’ and ‘O Holy Night’ in English. This version by Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo is the first verse. The text and translation are in the Premium worksheet, along with demonstrative adjectives such as ‘this’ and ‘that’ and a glossary of the three major religions present in France.

Brigitte is singing us this song called ‘La Madrague’ although I’ve always know it as ‘Coquillages et Crustacés’ – ‘Shellfish and crustaceans’. She misses the Provence wind as the train takes her away to Paris.
