French nouvel an – continue….
The New Year in France is very joyful. It centers around food, of course, and around friends. Here again, as for Christmas, celebrations vary from one region to the next, and from one person to another; however, one might say that if a French Christmas is family-centered, New Year is friends-centered. Celebrations start with le réveillon, on December 31. It is often also called la Saint Sylvestre, as it is Sylvestre’s saint’s day on the Christian calendar.

New Year’s eve dinner tends to be casual and a lot of finger foods are served. A typical French New Year’s meal includes:
- Champagne or mousseux – sparkling wine, because if’s festive and gold color
- caviar
- seafood platter with raw oysters and clams, shrimp and crab
- smoked salmon
- verrines
- foie gras
- baked Alaska or floating islands because of the white and gold colors
- marrons glacés – iced chestnuts
