Most of you probably know recevoir as to receive. There are two things I want to say about recevoir. First, I know that in English, you can say “to receive a good grade/mark”. In French, the idiomatic way to translate to receive is « avoir une bonne note », not « recevoir une bonne note ». But the reason I wanted to talk about recevoir today, is when it is used for “having guests”. Just recevoir, not recevoir des invités.
- « Ils ne peuvent pas venir ce soir. Ils reçoivent. »
“They can’t come tonight. They have guests.”

présent : je reçois , nous recevons
passé composé : j’ai reçu , nous avons reçu
futur : je recevrai, nous recevrons
