Buying food at the market

Of course, un kilo de – a kilo of – and une livre de – 500 grams – is the most common way to buy fruit and vegetables. However, at the market, you might have to buy:

  • a bunch of asparagus — une botte d’asperges
  • a head of lettuce — une tête de salade
  • a bar of chocolate — une tablette de chocolat
  • a basket of strawberries — une barquette de fraises
  • garlic cloves — des gousses d’aïl
  • an ear of corn — un épi de maïs
  • a stick of butter — une plaquette, une motte de beurre
  • mussels — un litre de moules – not very much used anymore, as mussels as now sold “au kilo” or by the bag
